A Birthday Card to Nong Pat, on the occasion his 5th Birthday

Nong Pat, 5 years ago today you were born. So much has happened since then. It makes little sense to try to imagine what you would be like, or what our lives would be like now if you had survived. Yet, we still do. All the time.

In a sense, you have been with us all along: our time with you changed our lives in ways that we never could have imagined, and we carry your imprint within us wherever we go.

Last year at this time, your Mom was pregnant again, and we had a rough time of your birthday. We celebrated the time we had with you, and tried really hard not to imagine what we would do if our baby on the way had similar problems.

We didn't have to worry. Your sister Ganta was born on July 19, perfectly normal and very healthy. She is a sunny baby, and brings joy and wonder to our lives. I'm sure you would have liked her too: she charms everyone. I'm pretty sure she would have liked you as well - every time she sees your picture she smiles.

Happy birthday Pat. We all wish you were here.
